Johann Georg Faust was a German itinerant alchemist, astrologer, and magician of the German Renaissance. Doctor Faust became the subject of folk legend. He was notably adapted by Christopher Marlowe as a tragic hero in his play “The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus” (1604). The legend was again adapted in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s closet drama “Faust” (1808).
There are several prints of grimoires or magical texts attributed to Faust. Dr. Johannes Faust’s “Miracle and Wonder Book” or “The Black Raven” or also called “The Threefold Coercion of Hell (Höllenzwang, 1669) is one of them.
